Hannah Bakke

Self-Directed Residency

Hannah Bakke is a singer-songwriter and musical theatre composer based in New York City. Originally from Minnesota, she grew up playing guitar and mandolin in a family folk band and brings the warmth and community-mindedness of the genre into her theatrical composition.

Hannah's work often gravitates towards characters in denial of their desires, and what it takes to push them over the edge. What does it look like to embrace wildness? How hot does the pot have to get?

She currently has two projects in development:

🐍 The Garden
A bluegrass riff on the garden of Eden story that reimagines Eden as a dive bar, with Adam, Eve and Lucifer fronting the house band. Hannah released a concept album for the project last year which can be found on Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube.

🦗LOCUST
A horror musical inspired by the Jekyll-and-Hyde-esque transformation that grasshoppers make into locusts in times of scarcity. LOCUST was commissioned by Trademark Theatre for their 2026 In the Works development series.

Hannah is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and her original work has been performed and developed with Out of the Box Theatrics, RE/VENUE NYC, The NYC Rogue Theatre Festival, Musical Theatre Factory, the Children’s Theatre Company, Trademark Theatre, and Prospect Musicals. She teaches elementary students how to write their own musicals with the New York City Children’s Theater and is a member of the New York City Songwriters Collective.
