Kaci Shields
Self-directed Residency
Kaci Shields (b. 1993) is a New York based non-objective artist working in large scale drawings, oil paintings, prints and collage. Informed by the evolution of art and thought, human service work and mythology. Her work explores how the mystical informs our daily lives, how it connects us and co-exists in an increasingly hostile world. Her process starts with automatic drawing of organic forms and forceful lines representing initial thoughts and boundaries. Later introducing vibrant colors, layering of materials and areas of blank canvas to mimic the contemplation of myths, magic, grief and love. At the heart of her work is the idea that metacognition allows us flexibility in our perceptions.
Kaci was born on Long Island, NY and completed her B.F.A in interdisciplinary art at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA. Her practice spans non-objective drawings and paintings, abstract collage and reductive block prints. She currently works in human services advocating for people experiencing homelessness, mental health crises and addiction.
