Christina Sylvia Simantira
Themed Residency: Overtouristification
Christina-Sylvia Simantira is a Greek-German visual artist who lives and works in Athens. She studied German Language and Literature (2008) at the University of Athens as well as Visual Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts (Studio of Prof. A. Antonopoulos). In February 2025, she completed her Master’s in Fine Arts under the supervision of Professor Kostis Velonis. Since the completion of her undergraduate studies in 2016, she has worked for the Goethe Institutes of Athens and Munich, the German School of Athens and the University of Athens. She has also studied with an Erasmus scholarship at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee and has participated in several DAAD-supported workshops, as well as numerous projects and group exhibitions at various institutions in Greece, including Kappatos Gallery, Platforms Project, the Municipal Gallery of Piraeus and the Municipal Gallery of the Cyclades.
In March 2026, she presented her first solo exhibition, Thread, at Art Studio SGG in Exarchia, Athens.
Her work has been recognized through awards from the Rosa Luxemburg Institute in Athens and the Athenian Centre for Kidney Disease. She has also created two murals at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens.
She works with a variety of materials, including fabrics, ready-made objects, second-hand clothes and furniture, creating in situ installations, sculptures and large-scale paintings on long pieces of fabric. Her practice is primarily concerned with indirectly questioning established habits and patterns of thought, often introducing a twist of self-sarcasm and humor. She explores issues of identity, boundaries and hierarchies, starting from the formation of the female role as the primary provider of food.
